Optimizing imagery for internet and software-based applications.

Does anyone out there have any good ideas for compressing .bmp and .tif files outside of using LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) lossless compression for .tif? I'm just curious...since I have Gigabytes of .tif files that I store for our mapping business, and Windows uses a LOT of .bmp images in its interface (and a lot of the software that runs on it)...and I'd like to get those files sizes down on my lapto…
