Graphics Optimization

Optimizing imagery for internet and software-based applications.

Reasons why we all should be optimizing graphics for on-screen display

Whenever I am giving my "sermons" on this particular topic at the conferences I am presenting workshops at from year to year, I always identify the following three primary reasons why optimizing graphics for on-screen display is something that we should all be mindful of:

- Financial Benefits. Small graphics equals smaller file storage requirements, less bandwidth consumption, less time/electricity needing to be consumed to share the exact same information with our constituents and, ultimately, a more positive experience for those constituents on our web sites.

- Environmental Benefits. Smaller graphics will equal less server capacity and less electricity being consumed to distribute the same information...and the faster delivery of smaller information can also potentially extend the life cycles of older equipment as well...slowing the amount of hazardous waste being created in the manufacturing and disposal of computer equipment.

- Societal Benefits. Quite simply, optimizing imagery works towards leveling the playing field between the wealthy and the poor in our world. Not everyone is blessed with access to T1 connection speeds...and the more we can do to deliver content more-quickly to those with slower connection speeds, the more productive and "informed" those individuals can become.

That is usually at the center of my "three-point sermon" on this particular topic. However, I would LOVE to hear other people's opinions and ideas for why image optimization is a worthwhile endeavor for all of us who happen to publish content to the World Wide Web. Thanks!
